Oh, the Places You’ll Go: Supporting Triangle Elementary School

Students around the United States celebrated March 2nd as the unofficial school holiday known as Read Across America in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. The holiday was created in 1997 to encourage more students to read. Many classes read Dr. Seuss books like The Lorax, Hop on Pop and The Cat in the Hat. Libraries decorate in Seussical attire while displaying many of the works of the great children’s author in order to get more children excited about reading. Reading not only helps their vocabulary and writing skills, it helps their whole development.

St. Michael’s Inc. supported Triangle Elementary School on Read Across America Day as the charity of the month. Located near Quantico Marine Corp Base, this local elementary school serves over 700 students from a wide variety of backgrounds including many military families. Nominated by employee Nicole Green, St. Michael’s approved this request, and donated enough money to purchase a hardcover copy of Oh, the Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss for each child in four separate classes as well as snacks and two bean bag chairs for the library.

Nicole, along with two other St. Michael’s employees Jacob Mosser and Roxanne Austin, volunteered to go to Triangle Elementary School, deliver the beanbag chairs as well as read “Oh The Places You’ll Go” to these four classes.  After reading the story, students were able to interact with the St. Michael’s employees by asking questions about where they worked, what their favorite books were, and about their goals. Todd Brymer, the President and Founder of St. Michael’s suggested this book as the focus for this charity event because not only does it tie into the Dr. Seuss theme, it is a book about all of the great things ahead of you in life and no matter the obstacle, you can achieve whatever you set your mind.

“I believe in supporting our children and encouraging them in their educational journey. I am so very grateful that St. Michaels’ chose to support the idea of a read a-loud at Triangle Elementary School and allowing the students to take home a tangible gift with their memory”, said Nicole Green.
